Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different root canal irrigants on the push-out bond strength of Endosequence Root Repair Material (ERRM) compared to ProRoot white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) when used as furcation perforation repair materials. Methods: Eighty extracted human permanent mandibular molar teeth were randomly divided into two experimental groups (n=40) according to the type of perforation repair material. Each experimental group was then subdivided into 5 subgroups (n=8) according to the irrigant used (2.5% sodium hypochlorite, 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite followed by 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, 2% chlorhexidine gluconate and distilled water).All samples were allowed to set for 48 h and stored at 37ºC with 100% humidity. After the experimental periods, the specimens were submitted to the push-out test and the failure modes were examined under scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: There was a non-statistically significant difference between all the experimental groups (p<0.05). ERRM had higher mean push-out bond strength when compared to WMTA. For ERRM, the statistical ranking of push-out bond strength was as follows within the experimental subgroups: EDTA > CHX > NaOCl > NaOCl followed by EDTA > Distilled water. For WMTA, the statistical ranking of push-out bond strength was as follows within the experimental subgroups: EDTA > NaOCl > CHX > NaOCl followed by EDTA > Distilled water. Conclusion: It was concluded that ERRM showed a promising result as a furcation perforation repair material owing to its ease of manipulation and unrestricted working time. The different root canal irrigants did not significantly affect the push-out bond strength of both ERRM and MTA.
