Abstract

In the first year after implant insertion, a physiological peri-implant bone level alterationof 0.5–2mm is expected. In the subsequent years, the rate of bone loss slows to about0–0.2mm per year. Platform switching has been used to a large extent, as it allows boneremodeling around the implant favoring the maintenance of the bone crest with the reduction instress in the cervical region of the implant.Materials and methods: Ten completely edentulous patients received 4 mandibular implantsin a split mouth technique 2 with regular platform and 2 with platform switching. Bone heightand bone density were evaluated. Results: After 1 year, there was no statically significant difference between regular implantsand platform switched implants. Conclusion: within the limitations of this study it was shown that platform switched implants doesn’t have an effect on crestal bone changes.
