The aim of this work was to study the changes in serum levels of growth hormone, insulin like growth factor 1 and its binding proteins 1and 3 in patients with liver cirrhosis, ascites, and hepatorenal syndrome, and the possible relations of these changes to the degree of liver affection, sodium retention and ascites formation. A significant positive correlation was detected between Child-Pugh score and IGF-1-IGFBP index in all cirrhotic patients. While no significant correlation was detected between fractional excretion of sodium, as a representative of sodium excretion, and this index in the same group of cirrhotic patients. Our study confirms the previously described changes in the levels of GH, IGF-1 and IGFBP-1 and 3, and their relations to the liver condition. However we could not confirm the relation of these changes to sodium retention and ascites formation.
