Abstract

This study was carried out on 10 patients suffering from resistant ascites secondary to liver cirrhosis not responding to medical treatment by diuretics and/or repeated paracentesis. The aim of this study is to assess to the complications of the peritoneovenous shunt in treatment of refractory ascites giving special interest for type and duration of post-operative coagulopathy. Successful shunting leads to the loss of abdominal distension, increased protein deposition, increased muscle mass, improved quality of life and the return of a functional state. Carefully selection of the patients with good and special postoperative care including positioning the patient is 45 for 30 minutes immediately postoperative and close monitoring of coagulation profile with special emphasis on D-dimer and PTT.
