Abstract

Statement of problem : home bleaching is routinely prescribed by dentists , what happen if these materials leaked out from bleaching tray and contact to artificial restoration made from Vita Enamic hybrid ceramic ? Purpose : this study was to assess the effect of home bleaching with: 10% carbamide peroxide ( opalescence ), 16% carbamide peroxide ( Nite- white ) on the surface roughness and micro hardness of the Enamic Hybrid Ceramic compared with Vita Mark II Feldspathic one . Materials and Methods : 42 samples were classified in to two groups : Group ( I ) :Enamic hybrid ceramic , Group ( II ) Feldspathic ceramic , and each group was further subdivided into three subgroups according to bleaching agents used. Subgroup (A ) discs from each material immersed in distilled water 8 hours daily for 30 days to serve as a control . Subgroup (B) discs from each material subjected to 10% opalescence 8 hours daily for 30 days . Subgroup (C) discs from each material subjected to 16% NithWhite 8 hours daily for 30 days. Limitation of area of gel application were made using specially constructed Teflon mold . Application of bleaching were made for 8 hours every day then discs washed and kept in distilled water for the next day till 30 days application . Then the surface roughness measurements were measured by elcometer surface guage profile tester and micro hardness measurements measured by Digital Display Vickers Micro-hardness Tester . The results were calculated and statistically analyzed. Two-way ANOVA test was used to study the effect of ceramic type, bleaching agents and their interactions on surface roughness and micro-hardness. Results: The results showed that bleaching agent had a statistically significant effect on mean (Ra), Opalescence subgroups showed the statistically significantly highest mean (Ra) where as was no statistically significant difference between control and Nite -White subgroups. For micro-hardness test the results showed that ceramic type and bleaching agent had a statistically significant effect on mean micro-hardness. Feldspathic ceramic showed statistically significantly higher mean micro-hardness than Enamic with all subgroups .For both ceramic materials control subgroups showed the statistically significantly highest mean micro-hardness. Nite-White subgroups showed statistically significantly lowest mean micro-hardness value. Opalescence subgroups showed the statistically significantly lowest mean micro-hardness value Conclusion: physical properties of both Enamic and Feldspathic ceramics affected by home bleaching agents. Different bleaching agents used cause significant decrease in micro hardness for both Enamic and Feldspathic ceramic and Increase in surface roughness of both ceramic materials used.
