Abstract

Preterm birth is considered one of the most important causes of perinatal mortality and morbidity, affecting around 13 million infants worldwide per year. Any treatment which prolongs the length of gestation could have a profound effect on neonatal mortality and morbidity. Various drugs have been used as tocolytics for the management of cases with preterm labor; however none of them is considered the best. This has directed our attention to undergo this study on 90 women, attended and admitted from the casualty unit of the Obstetric department in Kasr El-Eini and Air Force Military Hospitals with preterm labor pains, intact membranes, singleton pregnancy between 24 and 36 weeks gestation, to compare the efficacy of nifedipine, glyceryl trinitrate with ritodrine, and their side effects on the mother and the newborn. Several studies including the present study concluded that nifedipine and glyceryl trinitratre may be an alternative to ritodrine with the same efficacy but fewer side effects and less cost.
