Abstract

The current study is a descriptive, cross sectional study, conducted at four PHC facilities in greater Cairo area to evaluate the nutrition services provided to pregnant females attended for antenatal care. Exit-interview questionnaire with 200 attendant pregnant females and observation check lists were the main tools used for performance assessment of the health care providers. Assessment of knowledge of the health care providers, client satisfaction and assessment of the capacity of the studied health facilities were also performed. Our finding in the current study showed that, although the attendants seem to be generally satisfied with services, yet detailed interrogation proved that there are many points which are still deficient in providing the nutrition services. Observing the providers’ performance, it was noticed that many essential points are deficient as in height measurement, examination of signs of malnutrition and providing nutrition education. Health care providers’ knowledge was insufficient in many aspects related to nutrition. The study recommended that nutrition should be mandated as a required and essential component of comprehensive health care. Training of service providers, proper job description and setting nutritional quality standards are all required to provide high quality nutrition service.
