Abstract

The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of two differentobturating systems (Gutta percha system and Resilon system) on vertical root fracture of endodontically treated teeth using three dimensional finite element stress analysis model. Three finite element models were designed; (model A) was obturated with gutta percha, (model B) was obturated with Resilon, and (model C) was designed with an empty -not obturated- root canal. Von Mises criterion has then been chosen as more representative of a multiaxial stress state. Results: The results of this FEA study showed that the three analyzed models exhibited very near maximum Von Mises stress values, especially model (A) and (B) which showed nearly the same maximum stresses values of 335.77MPa and 335.75 MPa respectively, while model (C) showed slightly higher stress values of 336.23 MPa. Conclusions: It was concluded that root canal obturation with a resin based material didn’t reinforce the roots and the idea to create a monoblock inside the root canal was difficult to be created.
