Endoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosis of esophageal varices. Endoscopic screening is recommended for all cirrhotic patients. Repeated endoscopic examinations are costy to the patients, decrease their compliance, add burden to the endoscopic units and add extra-cost to the country. Non invasive prediction of esophageal varices can restrict endoscopic screening to patients at risk. Hepatic fibrosis scores (APRI, Fib-4, Forns Index and Lok Score) and fibroscan can predict the presence of esophageal varices and large esophageal varices with high sensitivity and specificity. Fibroscan was the best parameter and may help to select patients for endoscopic screening.
