Abstract

The objectives of this retrospective statistical study were to study the prevalence of neonatal morbidity associated with diabetic pregnancy with special emphasis on respiratory complications among infants of diabetic mothers attending Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) of the children's hospital (Abu El-Riche) and Kasr Al-Aini Cairo University hospital. For All live born infants of diabetic mothers pregestational (PGD) or gestational (GDM) born between March 2007 and March 2008, full history was obtained, detailed physical examination of the newborn, laboratory work, imaging studies, diagnosis on admission and any superimposed complications in addition to therapy were recorded from patient files. Out of 33 IDM, 26 were born to GDM and 7 to PGD. 25 infants suffered from respiratory distress of various causes and most of them required respiratory support but for a period of time less than 28 days. Mortality rate was 18.2%. Other complications were documented also and results were analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version II. All IDMs represent a high-risk group regardless of maternal type of DM or treatment used for control of hyperglycemia but outcome was less favorable in infants of PGD mothers.
