Viral myocarditis is an important cause of cardiac morbidity and mortality in infants and children. It is important to understand the pathophysiology of viral heart infections to diagnose viral myocarditis in its earliest stages using conventional methods in addition to new cardiac biomarkers and cardiac MRI with contrast. This leads to many innovative treatments such as immune globulin therapy, amiodarone, DNA vaccine, Tumor necrosis factor-alpha, proteasome inhibitors and percutaneous cardiopulmonary support.
