Abstract

Ionic silver-releasing hydrofiber dressings were used to cover the diabetic foot ulcers of 20 patients with mean age of 53 years. Ionic silver provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. Among 11 evaluable subjects; reduction in pain, decrease in slough and increase in granulation tissue and epithelialization were significant with a mean reduction in the ulcer area of 36.8 %. During the 60 days of the study period; five subjects (45.1%) showed marked improvement. Infection resolved in five ulcers (45.1%). In 220 dressing changes, the mean wear time was 3.5 days.
