Treatment for patients with a first-time acute anterior shoulder dislocation is somewhat controversial. The retrospective studies that do exist have shown recurrence rates as high as 25-100% in patients younger than 40 years of age who have a first-time dislocation and are treated non-operatively in form of immobilization with the arm tied to the torso for three to four weeks following a primary shoulder dislocation and followed by rehabilitation programs for regaining range of motion. This gave rise to the idea of early surgical intervention of cases, especially for young adults, usually male, engaged in highly demanding physical activities who have sustained their first acute traumatic shoulder dislocation.
