The international division of labor originates from a long historical evolution beginning in the 17th century with the rise of nation-states in Western Europe and their competition to conquer territories and establish empires. This political domination, combined with the development of modern industry and technology due to the Industrial Revolution, has shaped the current division between developed and less developed countries. Modern industry, technology, production, and income are concentrated in developed countries (Global North), whereas less developed countries (Global South) mainly specialize in agriculture and extractive industries.

يعود التقسيم الدولي للعمل إلى تطور تاريخي طويل بدأ في القرن السابع عشر، مع ظهور الدول القومية في أوروبا الغربية وتنافسها للاستيلاء على الأراضي وتأسيس إمبراطوريات جديدة. ساهمت هذه السيطرة السياسية، إلى جانب نمو الصناعة والتكنولوجيا الحديثة نتيجة للثورة الصناعية، في تشكيل التقسيم الحالي بين الدول المتقدمة والدول الأقل تقدمًا. تتركز الصناعة الحديثة والتكنولوجيا والإنتاج والدخل في الدول المتقدمة (شمال العالم)، بينما تتخصص الدول الأقل تقدمًا (جنوب العالم) في الزراعة والصناعات الاستخراجية.
