Some Numerical Analysis Examples in Fortran
Ahmed F. Ghaleb and others
11-1964
This memo. is the result of an effort carried out by a group of undergraduate students from the faculty of science, Cairo university, majoring in physics and mathematics. They spent their summer vacation, from July to September 1964, in the Operations Research Center, National Planning Institute, where they have been trained on the use of the electronic digital computer I.B.M. 1620. We assign to them the task of writing computer's programs of some of the classical problems in nummerical analysis. This was found very convenient as complementing the lectures given by the center's expert, Dr. Abbas Abdel-Karim in numerical analysis, in the short training period carried in the Operations Research Center from February to May 1964. In these memos. (memos. No. 399,408,424), some of the classical methods in numerical analysis had been discussed, and Karim, in his exposition, emphasized the computers potentialities by giving in his discussion the block diagrams & flow charts whenever it was necessary. He did not, however, put down the machine program, thus leaving a gap which is being felt. These students, in this memos, had tried to fill that gap. They had written the machine's program in Fortran II & the programs had been tested on the I.B.. 1620 In fact the programs and the numerical results given in this memo, are the direct print-output from the computer. I do hope this memo. will serve its purpose among those who are interested in following systematic scientific examples on Fortran II.
