These lectures deal with the COBOL Language, the Common Business Oriented Language. A Language designed for use in business- applications. COBOL is in fact the most widely used language in Computer world today. It is a commercial programming language. The first COBOL Compiler was introduced in 1955. It was developed for use in business data processing. This language has many advantages. For example, COBOL is not dependent on a particular com- piler computer system or generation of computers. In many ways, the pro- gram is self-documented. Therefore, it is not necessary to develop a great deal of additional documentation. Before we begin developing into the details of COBOL programming, let us look at the following simple program. Considering that simple COBOL program. It was simple enough that we should be able to follow generally what it is intended to do just by reading it.
