Determination of Surface Cracks Depth in Beams using RayleighWaves

Abstract

Surface opening crack is one of the most dangerous defects occur in concrete structure. This crack may penetrate only the concrete cover or extend to more than that, which leads to the reduction in the structure efficient. So, it is important to identify and characterize the depth of this crack to repair it. In the previous works, the Rayleigh wave was used to determine the crack depth due to the advantage of having maximum energy of wave component that makes it easy to recognize it. In this paper, the crack depth is determined using two different wave parameters; the amplitude and the power. A good correlation between the results obtained for the determination of the crack depth using the wave amplitude and wave power was established. The numerical simulation was done using common finite element software (Abaqus) and the experimental test was also performed to verify the numerical result obtained.
