This paper aims at the use of numerical modeling to investigate the ground movements due to tunneling construction in soft ground, as part of the study for the proposed construction of a roadway tunnel under the railway tracks in Zagazig City, Egypt. Two dimensional numerical analyses are being applied to simulate the specific case of the tunnel and its approach for prediction of the associated settlements. It is worthy to mention that this is the first time to consider the application of NATM in Zagazig City in Egypt, to resolve one of the main traffic congested areas. The purpose of the numerical simulation is to check the stability of the overburden soil and railway tracks and the suitability of the NATM construction method for shallow and deep sections. Additionally, the strengthening of the ground to ensure more safety for NATM application has been also investigated. The numerical results are promising; regarding stability and at the same time minimizing the construction cost and could also enlighten the decision makers to optimum solutions at other and similar relatively short tunneling around the city of Zagazig.
