Abstract

The leakage of petroleum products contaminates the soil necessitates the knowledge of the geotechnical properties and behavior of contaminated soils. The present study is a part of a laboratory program aims to understanding the influence of many petroleum contaminants on the physical, index and mechanical properties of cohesive soils. Only Kerosine contaminant is considered in this paper. Contaminated specimens were prepared by mixing the soil with different contaminants contents (2, 4, 8, 10 and 16 %) at the optimum water content as determined from the modified Proctor test. Laboratory tests results presented in this paper include physical properties, Atterberg limits, consolidation and unconfined compression tests, all of which were carried out on clean and contaminated natural soil classified as high plasticity clay from the Nile Delta Deposits. The results showed that Kerosine contamination of the clay may have significant influence on the clay properties tested in this paper.
