Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study the effect of embedment depth of strip footing supported reinforced sand cushion on peat soil on the bearing capacity and the settlement. For this purpose, a numerical study was conducted to investigate the influence of the parameters involved as foundation depth, sand characteristics, types and number of reinforced layers and to verify that the geogrids with higher tensile modulus performed better than geotextile with higher tensile modulus and fiber cemented cushion is better than both of them. The strain developed along the reinforcement is directly related to the settlement. The test results also the redistribution of stresses below the reinforced zone can result in reducing the consolidation settlement of the underlying peat soil. Also we studied the effect of concentricity of load. The verification of test model was studied using FEA program (PLAXIS). Comparison between the numerical and experimental model results was carried out to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical model. On the other hand the finite element model was directed towards the determination of the parameters that would be difficult to be measured in the experimental tests.
