Abstract

Increasing the axle load for rail freight transportation became necessary to meet the increased demand in goods transportation and the significant progress in manufacturing. The track super-structure represents a crucial part of the structure of railway track systems. The properties of the super-structure components strongly affect the overall track structure behavior especially with increased level of stresses in case of dealing with increased axle load applications. The dynamic interaction between a freight vehicles running on a railway track is affected by the characteristics of the super-structure components which include the rails, under rail pads, sleepers, under sleeper pads and fastening elements. The present paper, presents a holistic overview of the design requirements of the railway track super-structure components needed for the design of new freight lines with increased axle loads up to 40 tons/axle. Different components' characteristics were analyzed to ensure a safe and efficient performance of the track system. An example of numerical analysis is presented to illustrate the impact of changing the super-structure properties, on the dynamics of the railway vehicle. Recommendations for the final track specific superstructure design were presented with an appropriate justification.
