Abstract

Objective: The aim of the current study was to evaluate the inflammatory status in Egyptian patients with chronic periodontitis with and without diabetes (type 2) by evaluating the anti-inflammatory Interleukin-10 (IL-10) and the inflammatory Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α) serum levels. Methods: A total number of 50 subjects were enrolled to the study after meeting the inclusion criteria, divided into three groups; Chronic Periodontitis (n=20), Diabetic Chronic Periodontitis (n=20) and Controls (n=10). For each subject the clinical measurements were recorded (PPD, CAL, Gingival recession), random blood glucose levels assessed, blood samples collected followed by serum separation then IL-10 and TNF-α using commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Results: The mean ± SD concentration of serum TNF-α were significantly increased in both Chronic Periodontitis groups as compared to controls, positively correlated with clinical parameters. While the mean ± SD concentration of serum IL-10 were significantly decreased in both Chronic Periodontitis groups as compared to the controls and negatively correlated to clinical parameters. Conclusions: The current study concluded that there is an increased inflammatory burden in Egyptian chronic periodontitis patients as evidenced by an increase in TNF-α and a decrease in IL-10 which suggests a prominent role in predisposing other inflammatory diseases.
