Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the Pentraxin 3 (PTX 3) levels in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of gingivitis and chronic periodontitis patients and compare them to the healthy individuals to predict it's value as a periodontal disease biomarker. Methods: A total of eighty participants were enrolled into the study. The participants were divided into three groups based on the clinical parameters of periodontal disease; Healthy Control (n=20), Gingivitis (n=30) and Chronic Periodontitis (n=30) groups. For each subject; Clinical measurements were recorded (probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment loss (CAL) and gingival recession), GCF was collected then subsequently eluted then analyzed for PTX 3 levels using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and analyzed for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) using a kinetic method. Results: the mean  SD concentration of GCF PTX 3 were found to be significantly increased in gingivitis group as compared to the control group and significantly increased in chronic periodontitis group as compared to the control and the gingivitis groups. GCF PTX 3 correlated positively with the clinical parameters of Periodontal disease. GCF PTX 3 was found to have high sensitivity and specificity in differentiating gingivitis and chronic periodontitis. Conclusions: GCF PTX 3 concentration is directly related to the severity of periodontal disease, it could be used as an indicative biomarker of the inflammatory status of Periodontal disease.
