Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis for the Eccentric Beam-Column Joints
2nd International Conference on Civil Engineering: Recent Applications and Future Challenges

Abstract

Over the last century, the study of the RC beam-column joints has drawn the attention of many researchers. However, a few studies have investigated the behavior of eccentric beam-column joints, where the centerline of the beam is offset, in the plan, from the column centerline, which is widely found in perimeter RC building frames. Recent earthquakes resulted in distinctive damages in eccentric beam-column joints due to high torsion moments and may lead to brittle behavior. In this study, finite element analysis have been conducted to numerically study the behavior of experimental interior and exterior eccentric joints designed with ACI 381 and AJI1999 codes guidelines. Then, the effect of various parameters including the joint type (Exterior and Interior), the column aspect ratio, and the joint aspect ratio (the ratio between beam depth to column width) was investigated. Results showed that joint aspect ratio had the predominant effect on both global and local joint behavior. Moreover, it was found that although the increase in the column aspect ratio increased the torsion moment but an enhancement has been observed on the joint behavior. Lastly, the interior joints suffered from extensive torsion deterioration than exterior ones.
