Irrigation canals in Egypt suffer from many problems which affect its efficiency in water conveyance to agricultural lands. These problems include a large amount of water is lost due to seepage through loose boundary and evaporation from the water surface, vegetation growing inside and over the banks of canals, changes in canals cross section due to erosion and deposition, over-dredging during cleaning of canals and pollution from solid waste and sometimes wastewater spilled in it. So, ministry of water resources and irrigation in Egypt began impetuous project for canal lining i.e. national project of canal rehabilitation. This project target 6185 km lining of canals though two years 2020/2021 and 2021/2022. However, it is noticed during the implementation of this project that the cross section of lined canal is taken as the same of earthen canal and sometimes the bed width is reduced in case canal of large bed width, however, for new lined canal, the cross section is designed as best hydraulic section. For the two cases i.e. existing earthen canal and new lined canal, there are not clear design standard can refer to it when design or redesign of canal cross section. The objective of the current study is to review and discuss the different criteria and constraints which must be taken into account in hydraulic design of rehabilitation and new lined canals. Besides, effect of lining aging on the performance of canal is studied.
