Abstract

Several tall structures are built on deep foundations, such as marine dolphins, high-rise platforms, transmission towers, dock fendering systems and abutments that constitute significant uplift loads. We implemented a pile-modification technique in this research to improve behavior of traditional piles and this improved pile is known as the finned pile. By having four fins welded around the bottom perimeter of the pile, this modification increases the pile capacity. Experimentally, axial static tension loading was implemented for various pile groups different in number of piles and in spacing between piles in pile groups. Also, soil relative density (Dr) of 30, 50, and 80%, and fin geometry was investigated. All the sets of tests were performed at constant fin width, fin length, number of fins, embedment depth, and pile diameter to evaluate the efficiency of the pile-modification strategy. The experimental study aimed to investigate the uplift capacity and displacement of the pile groups with/without fins. There was a significant increase in the uplift capacities of finned pile groups compared with those of conventional piles without fins. The ultimate uplift capacity of the finned pile group increases with increasing inter-pile spacing. The ultimate uplift capacity of the finned pile group increases with an increasing number of piles. The pile-group performance greatly improved with an increase in Dr.
