Abstract

Background: Maternal near miss has gained attention as an important indicator of the quality of obstetric care. It is newly introduced in Palestinian governmental hospital. Ministry of Health has allocated 12 focal point doctors in the twelve governmental hospitals in West Bank to follow and report the maternal near miss cases. The aim of this study was to investigate the challenges in reporting of maternal near miss cases in labor and maternity wards. Methodology: This qualitative research was conducted using in depth interview and interview guide questions that built based on previous literature and researcher's experience. The sample includes all twelve Palestinian focal point doctors of maternal near miss in order to gain information from them about challenges that faced in reporting and documenting. Interviews were conducted which ranged from 30-45 minutes. Data was transcribed ad verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Using thematic approach, results showed four themes appear in this study: paper format and overload work; policy of ministry of health: Communication and coordination problem and personal barriers. Conclusion: In order to overcome the challenges in reporting maternal near miss, policy maker should work to solve the barriers that showed in current study such as paper format and overload work; policy of ministry of health: communication and coordination problem.
Recommendation: to revise the paper format to make them simple; have a control body; create a culture of team work for documentation; integrate the policy of reporting to be part of work and update team with advance training.
