Abstract

Construction projects in remote areas in Egypt are characterized by geographical isolation, limited resources, logistical difficulties, and harsh environmental conditions, all of which can significantly affect labor performance and productivity. Despite being perceived as barren, these areas hold substantial economic, cultural, and tourism potential. The primary issue lies in their distance from urban centers, resulting in a lack of essential services such as healthcare, transportation, water, and energy sources.
This research aims to identify and analyze the factors influencing labor productivity in construction projects located in remote areas. To achieve this objective, the study defines productivity concepts, establishes criteria for classifying a construction project as remote, and examines key productivity determinants within the construction sector.
A structured questionnaire was designed to collect data, categorizing 50 influencing factors into four main groups: human, administrative, technical, and external. The survey was distributed to 100 employees from one of Egypt's largest contracting companies. Using importance index analysis, the study identified the most significant factors affecting labor productivity. The findings revealed that worker experience and skill are the most critical human factors, material availability is the most significant administrative factor, work interruptions due to design or specification changes are the most influential technical factor, and the difficulty of access to the site is the most impactful external factor.
These findings provide valuable insights for decision-makers, enabling them to prioritize key productivity factors while also addressing less influential aspects to enhance efficiency and accelerate delayed projects in remote areas.
