يهدف هذا البحث إلى بيان جانب من جوانب خدمة السنة النبوية المطهرة. وهو فن "التعقب " فهو بمثابة حوار علمي، ونقاش حديثي، ونقد بناء بين الأئمة  لبيان النقص، وسد الخلل، وبيان التقصير الذي لا يخلو منه عمل بشري فمرادهم الحق والصواب لا يريدون غيره.
 من أجل ذلك تتبع الحافظ المحقق المدقق ابن حجر‌ في كتابه الماتع الذي
لا يستغني عنه طالب حديث "تهذيب التهذيب"  الذي جاء حافلاً بأنواع شتى من التعقب على كثير من الأئمة السابقين، ومن بين هؤلاء الحافظ عبد الغني ابن سعيد المقدسي‌ في كتابه "الكمال في أسماء الرجال" لأن هذا الكتاب محط قبول، وعناية، ومنزلة عظيمة عند العلماء والنقاد، لأنه أول مصنف في رجال الكتب الستة وأصل  لكثير من الكتب التي صُنفت في علم الرجال بعده. لذلك عقدت النية، وصرفت الهمة لجمع تلك التعقبات، ودراستها دراسة حديثية، ومناقشتها لبيان وجه الحق والصواب فيها وفق قواعد المحدثين في هذا الفن.
وقد اتبعت في هذا البحث المنهج الاستقرائي، وذلك باستقراء التعقبات التي تعقب فيها الحافظ ابن حجر‌ تعقباً صريحاً على الحافظ عبد الغني المقدسي‌. كما اتبعت المنهج النقدي، والتحليلي، بنقد هذه التعقبات، وتحليلها تحليلاً علمياً بذكر أقوال الأئمة النقاد، ومناقشتها من أجل الترجيح وفق هذه الأراء .
This research aims to show the aspect of the service of the Sunnah purified, which is the art of "tracking" it is a scientific dialogue, and modern discussion, and constructive criticism between the imams in order to clarify the shortage, and fill the defect, and the statement of negligence, which is not without human work, they want the right and right do not want other.
For this reason, Al-Hafiz followed the investigator and auditor Ibn Hajar " May Allah have mercy on him" in his book Al-Mat'a, which is indispensable for a modern student "Tahtheeb Al-Tahtheeb", which came full of various types of tracking on many of the previous imams, and among these Al-Hafiz Abdul Ghani Ibn Saeed Al-Maqdisi" May Allah have mercy on him" in his book "Perfection in the Names of Men", this book was the focus of acceptance, care, and great status among scholars and critics, because it is the first work in the men of the six books and the origin of many books that were classified in the science of men Several. Therefore, the intention was held, and the energy was spent to collect these tracks, study them in a modern study, and discuss them to clarify the face of truth and correctness in them according to the rules of the modernists in this art.
In this research, I followed the inductive approach, by extrapolating the traces in which Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar was followed explicitly on Al-Hafiz Abdul Ghani Al-Maqdisi. It also followed the critical and analytical approach by criticizing these tracks, analyzing them scientifically by mentioning the statements of critical imams, and discussing them in order to weigh according to these views.
