Diagnostic Value of Presepsin for Bacterial Infection in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis

Abstract

Background: Presepsin serum levels can be measured to assess the severity of an infection and to track the clinical effects of therapy interventions. The aim of this work is to evaluate the diagnostic capacity of presepsin serum levels in the early detection of bacterial infections in cirrhotic patients and its usefulness in evaluating response to antibiotic therapy.
Methods: This prospective case control study included 52 patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis of various etiologies, with an age of 18 or older and both sexes . Patients were divided into two equal groups: Group A: decompensated cirrhotic patients without bacterial infection and group B: decompensated cirrhotic patients with bacterial infection. Presepsin levels were analyzed by receiving operating characteristic curve to evaluate their ability to predict bacterial infection.
Results: Albumin levels were significantly lower in group B than group A (P=0.022). C-reactive protein and Presepsin levels were significantly higher in group B than group A (P
