Abstract
Background: Oncology pediatric nurses are intimately exposed to the anguish and suffering of patients and their families while excessive exposure to children's suffering can result in compassion fatigue, stress, and burnout for nurses. Aim: To assess burnout and psychological distress among oncology nurses working with children having cancer. Design: A descriptive correlation research design was used to conduct the study. Setting: The study was conducted at children cancer hospital. Sample: Purposive sample of 188 nurses participated in the study in the selected working hospital from different departments in the hospital. Tools: Three tools were used for data collection, Tool I: Interviewing questionnaire sheet, Tool II: Burnout Questionnaire and Tool III: Psychological Distress questionnaire. Result: The current study venerated that, more than half were low burnout level and more than one third were moderate psychological distress Conclusion: The current study concluded that more than half of nurses were low burnout level.. There was highly statistically significant relation between total burnout and total psychological distress of the studied nurses. Recommendations: Integrating stress management courses in the clinical work for nurses.
