Abstract

A paucity of research has existed on job satisfaction of health educators therefore, this study aimed to assess the level of health educators' job satisfaction and explore some factors associated with their satisfaction. All health educators employed in the 7 health education offices of Alexandria were subjected to the study. Results revealed that among the ten hypothesized facets, relationship with supervisor and work content were the most satistying. Pay and resources emerged as the most dissatisfying job dimensions although they were cited in the 1st and 2nd importance ranks. Dissatisfaction was also evident for preparations for health education sessions, training and promotion opportunities, and physical work environment facets. Dissatisfaction with job status and prestige was expressed especially for social status of the profession as viewed by the community, friends or other health professionals in other specialties. The main barriers impeding health educators' performance were scarcity of resources, lack of suitable place for work in the office, lack of car or suitable compensation for transportation and unavailability of audiovisual aids. Therefore, more attention should be given to promotion of health education programs through activities designed to help others better understand and support such programs.
