Abstract
Religiosity and Political Participation in the Egyptian Society:
"An Analytical Reading of world Values Survey"
Ali Mohamed Ghanem
The current study, through the preliminary data of the World Values Survey in its seventh wave 2022, attempted to explore the relationship between the level of religiosity in Egyptian society and the level of political participation in it, as a stratified random sample of 1,200 individuals was drawn from Egyptian society, distributed across 21 governorates of the republic.
Accordingly, the study concluded that the majority of Egyptians have a high level of religiosity, as the majority of the study sample fell into the high level of the religiosity index, and that despite the high percentage of theoretical religiosity (concerned with belief in beliefs and their authenticity), the percentage of practical application of this religiosity is much lower. The results of the study also revealed that political participation was at its lowest levels among the study sample, at the three levels of political participation (political interest, organizational participation, and direct political participation).
The results also revealed that there is a statistically significant relationship between religiosity and political participation, and that as the level of religiosity among citizens increases, their political participation decreases in general. There is also a statistically significant relationship between religiosity and organizational participation, and that as individuals increase in religiosity, their organizational participation and affiliation with various political and civil institutions increase. There was also a statistically significant relationship between religiosity and both political interest and direct political participation, and that as citizens increase in religiosity, their level of political interest and direct political participation decreases.
