Abstract

Cuttlebone extracts are a natural material used in traditional medicine. Due to this natural material's unique physical, chemical, and mechanical characteristics, a range of novel medical applications for this extract have recently been investigated, such as in gastric diseases, skin wound healing, bone repair, antimicrobial activity, and dental material application. In our recent study, we confirmed the promise of CB extract as a natural material that has wound-healing properties. After induction of burns in diabetic guinea pigs and providing CB extract topically and/or orally, the wound started to heal due to the activation of Collagen Ι and Collagen Ⅲ mRNA expression, furthermore the up-regulation of the Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) protein expression. Additionally, by promoting fibroblast activation, CB extract increases the synthesis of matrix metalloprotease 1 (MMP1), which in turn promotes the remodeling of the fibrillar collagen structure and aids in wound healing. Therefore, these results suggested that CB exerts wound healing activity effects through the regulation of the Col Ι, Col Ⅲ, MMP1, FGF, and PDGF expression which then promotes burn and/ or wound healing.
