تعد قضة اللفظ والمعنى واحدة من ثنائيات النقد الأدبى ومدخله البلاغى مثل البلاغة والفصاحة، والشكل والمضمون، والطبع والتكلف وغيرها من الثنائيات النقدية والبلاغية.
وقد نالت هذه القضية اهتماماً كبيراً فى النقد العالمى كله بداية من النقد اليونانى كما يتجلى فى فكر علمية أفلاطون وأرسطو ومروراً بالنقد العربى القديم ومن أعلامه فخر الدين الرازى، وصولاً إلى النقد الأوروبى الحديث عند مدرسة براغ والشكلانيين الروس واستقراراً فى النقد العربى الحديث.
