يري دينيت أن نظرية داروين في التطور (الانتخاب الطبيعي) كان لها أثر كبير ليس فقط من الناحية البيولوجية ولكن في جوانب كثيرة أخري فهي ليست مسئولة عن التنوع في الحياة ولكن عن التنوع في الثقافة الإنسانية ككل فيري دينيت أن نظرية داروين مثل الحمض الكوني universal acid (هكذا يطلق عليها) فهي قامت بعملية تأكل أو تحلل للمعتقدات والأفكار القديمة عن العقل.
يعتبر دينيت المخ البشري نوع من الحاسوب وان كتابه فكرة داروين الخطيرة يهدف إلى تفسير الوجود الإنساني من خلال نظرية الانتخاب الطبيعي لداروين وليس من خلال منظور ديني .
Darwin's theory of evolution (natural selection), according to Dennett, has had a significant impact not only biologically but in many other respects; it is responsible not for the diversity of life but for the diversity of human culture as a whole. Darwin's theory, like universal acid (as it is called), has carried out a process of erosion or decomposition of ancient beliefs and ideas about the mind. Dennett considers the human brain to be a kind of computer and his book Darwin's Dangerous Idea aims to explain human existence through Darwin's theory of natural selection rather than through a religious perspective.
