Nurses’ Performance Regarding Bundle of Care for Prevention of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia

Abstract

 Background: Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is the most prevalent hospital-acquired infection that develops as a complication in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation (MV) after 48 hours from the intubation .Contributing to increased morbidity and mortality rates. Nurses work in intensive care units (ICUs) should be knowledgeable with the most updated evidence-based practices. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate nurses' performance regarding ventilator associated pneumonia bundle . Research design: A descriptive design was utilized for conducting the study. Setting: The study was carried out in General Intensive Care Unit at Beni-Suef University Hospital. Subjects: Convenience sample of all available nurses was included in the study. Tools for Data Collection: Data was obtained through Nurses' Knowledge Questionnaire And Nurses' Observational Checklist. Results: The result of current study revealed that,76% of studied nurses aged between 20 and 25 years with mean age (24.20±2.08) , 72% of studied nurses was female. Also, 56%of them had technical nursing institute. Moreover, 88% of studied nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge levels regarding bundle of care for prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia and 96% had incompetent levels of practice regarding bundle of care for prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia. Conclusion: The majority of the study nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge and most of them had incompetent level of practice regarding VAP bundle. There was highly statistically significant difference between the nurses' performance, level of knowledge and practice regarding VAP bundle. Recommendations: developing educational and in-service training programs to enhance nurses' knowledge and application of the VAP bundle. 
