Abstract

Despite all the efforts made by the state in this field, there is still a deficit in sugar production in light of the increasing demand for it and in light of the large gap between production and consumption suffered by the Egyptian market, as the volume of sugar production was estimated at about 2.56 million tons, while the volume of local sugar consumption amounted to 3.25 million tons and a gap of 697 thousand tons in 2023. The state has recently adopted the adoption of sugarcane cultivation using the modern method (seedlings).
1-The total yield per acre in the case of traditional agriculture in the research sample was about 89.6 thousand pounds, while it was about 125 thousand pounds in the case of modern agriculture with seedlings. While the total costs, net yield, break-even price, and break-even quantity for traditional agriculture were about 55.1 thousand pounds, 34.5 thousand pounds, 770 pounds, and 17.25 tons for each of them respectively, while in the case of agriculture with seedlings they were about 67.67 thousand pounds, 57.33 thousand pounds, 917.28 pounds, and 28.67 tons for each of them respectively. the return on costs and return on the pound invested in the case of traditional agriculture amounted to about 1.63 and 0.63 for each, respectively, while in the case of agriculture with seedlings, they amounted to about 1.85 and 0.85 for each, respectively.
2-Productivity in traditional agriculture reached about 44.8 tons/acre, while productivity in modern agriculture with seedlings reached about 62.5 tons/acre. Seedling agriculture led to an increase in productivity to about 17.7 tons/acre, representing about 39.5% of production per acre compared to traditional agriculture. The value of production in traditional agriculture reached about 89.6 thousand pounds, while in modern agriculture with seedlings it reached about 125 thousand pounds. Thus, planting with seedlings has achieved an increase in production value of about 35.4 thousand pounds/acre.
3-It is clear from the first scenario using the entire cultivated area for the benefit of sugar companies that the savings resulting from using seedlings amounted to a total savings in the total area of cane estimated at about 1666 thousand tons, equivalent to a savings in the quantity of sugar produced estimated at about 166 thousand tons of sugar. While the savings resulting from increasing the productivity of the acre amounted to about 17.8 tons per acre with a total savings in production of about 5931 thousand tons, which is equivalent to a savings in the quantity of sugar produced estimated at about 593.1 thousand tons, and the total savings according to this scenario amounted to about 759.7 thousand tons. By adding the savings achieved from this scenario to the quantity of sugarcane produced, which is 767.40 thousand tons, the total quantity produced will be approximately 1527.1, and thus the total quantity of sugar produced according to this scenario will be approximately 3317.8 thousand tons, representing approximately 102%, thus achieving self-sufficiency in sugar and a savings achieved estimated at approximately 2%.
4- It is clear from the second scenario that the area contracted by sugar companies, amounting to about 240 thousand acres, has saved as a result of using seedlings, with a total saving of the total area of cane estimated at about 1,200
using seedlings, with a total saving of the total area of cane estimated at about 1,200 thousand tons, equivalent to a saving in the quantity of sugar produced estimated at about 120 thousand tons of 1,200 thousand tons,    equivalent to a saving in the quantity of sugar produced estimated at about 120 thousand tons of sugar. The amount of savings resulting from increasing the productivity of the acre reached about 17.8 tons per acre, with a total savings in production of about 4,272 thousand tons, which is equivalent to a savings in the quantity of sugar produced estimated at about 427.2 thousand tons. The total quantity of sugar produced according to this scenario is about 3,105.18 thousand tons, representing about 95.4%.
