Abstract

A person is affected positively or negatively by everything that surrounds him. He often feels psychologically comfortable in one place while feeling uncomfortable in other. The reason behind the discomfort in many residential facilities which represent the research problem is often to neglect the psychological needs of dwelling residents and focus on functional dealing with spaces, and distance from nature in residential space. Which leads to significant negative effects on human psychological health, so sustainable design, seeks harmony with nature. To be compatible with the pillars of environmental, economic and social sustainability, with their spiritual, cultural and aesthetic values, with the aim of enhancing the positive impact of the natural environment on human psychological health, through the analytical study of natural systems and their impact on human psychological comfort, thus elevating the concept of green design to design standards with human values that take into human psychological needs. In what is known as “Biophilic Design" the research aims to highlight the importance of Biophilic Design in achieving sustainability and psychological comfort within residential spaces, and its integration with environmental psychology and the philosophy of (Feng Shui). The research assumes that communication with nature is an innate need. The research deals with a more comprehensive approach to the concept of sustainability in housing design and explores design theories. The research followed the descriptive analytical approach, the results revealed the importance of including natural elements within residential spaces, the integration between biophilic design, environmental psychology, and the Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui.
