Abstract

Background: Mechanical removal of dental biofilm is the gold standard treatment approach in stage 2 periodontitis. Using local delivery drugs as adjunctive to scaling and root planing (SRP) is commonly utilised to eliminate microorganisms and control the inflammatory response of the host.
Study objective: To evaluate probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and bleeding index (BI) in the non-surgical treatment of moderate periodontitis with application of intra-pocket Punica granatum (pomegranate) extract gel.
Materials and Method: There were 32 sites in this randomised controlled clinical trial, in stage 2 periodontitis patients, divided into two groups, equally. SRP were used to treat Group I, along with the intra-pocket application of pomegranate extract gel. SRP alone were used to treat Group II. PPD, CAL, and BI were evaluated for 2 groups at baseline prior to treatment and at twelve weeks after treatment.
Results: The evaluated parameters demonstrated improvement by the study end, compared to baseline, in terms of reducing PPD, CAL, and BI.
Conclusion: pomegranate extract gel is inexpensive, easy to be prepared with no adverse effects, and can improve the clinical parameters of periodontitis.
