Tomato farmers’ perception of safe handling practices with chemical pesticides in Qena governorate, Egypt

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the level of tomato farmers' perception of safe handling practices with chemical pesticides in Qena governorate, Egypt; this is done by achieving the following objectives: Determine the level of hearing of the respondents' farmers about safe handling practices with chemical pesticides, determine the level of seeing of the respondents' farmers of safe handling practices with chemical pesticides, and determining the correlation between the independent variables of the respondents' farmers and their level of perception of safe handling practices with chemical pesticides. This research was conducted on a simple random sample of 116 respondents, representing about 70.0% of the tomato farmers in three villages in Qena governorate; the data was collected using a questionnaire form through a personal interview during the months of February and March 2023, Frequencies, percentages, arithmetic mean, Spearman rank correlation coefficient, were used in analyzing the data and presenting the results, using the statistical program for the social sciences (SPSS). The results showed: 55.2% of the respondents' farmers that their overall level of hearing about safe handling practices with chemical pesticides is high, 81.9% of the respondents that their overall level of seeing of safe handling practices with chemical pesticides is moderate, 96.9% of the respondents that their overall level of perception of safe handling practices with chemical pesticides is moderate, a significant positives correlation between some of the independent variables of the respondents' farmers and their overall level of perception of safe handling practices with chemical pesticides, and a significant negatives correlation between some of the independent variables of the respondents' farmers and their overall level of perception of safe handling practices with chemical pesticides.
