Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the compatibility of natural rubber (NR) with different types of rubbers, including butyl rubber (IIR) as a nonpolar rubber, bromobutyl rubber (BIIR) and chlorobutyl rubber (CIIR) as polar rubbers. The NR/ IIR, NR/ BIIR, and NR/ CIIR blends were prepared with different blend ratios. The compatibility of the blends under investigation was evaluated by different physical techniques. To overcome the problem of incompatibility (phase separation) a third component was added as a compatibilizing agent to these blends, such as styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) block copolymer and maleic anhydride (MAH). The compatibility of such blends with and without different compatibilizers was assessed by rheometric characteristics; mismatch factor (Mf), physico-mechanical properties, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and heat of mixing data. The results of all these techniques were discussed. The overall results demonstrate that the addition of a small percentage of SBS and MAH as compatibilizers have decreased the domain size of the dispersed phase and increased the interfacial adhesion between the blend phases. Consequently, the compatibility, morphology and physico-mechanical properties of the investigated blends are noticeably improved.
