Endoscopic Excision of Benign Breast Lesions: Zagazig University Study

Abstract

Background: Benign breast diseases are a common pathological finding throughout a woman's lifetime. When excision is a must cosmosis should be an essential goal in its procedures, that's why a new minimally invasive technique has been developed. Application of new techniques of endoscopic surgery to breast lumps has recently been analyzed, it seems to have the potential to become an alternative approach with good both clinical and aesthetic results.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the technique's viability, safety, operating time, postoperative pain, length of hospital stay, and cosmetic result.

Patients and methods: This study was carried out on 12 female patients presented with benign breast lumps in the surgical oncology unit at the General Surgery Department, Zagazig University Hospital during the period from December 2022 to August 2023. The patients included in the study aged ≥18 years, had solitary or multiple benign breast lump, located at any breast quadrant.

Results: The age of the studied patients ranged from 18 to 49 years with a mean age 33.16±9.7 years. The most common quadrant of the breast lump is the upper outer quadrant 41.6%. Fibroadenoma was the most common finding in 50% of the patients, 75% of the patients had multiple lumps. the operative time ranged from 35-90 minutes with a mean time of 58.6±19.9 minutes. 83.3% of the patients considered the cosmetic outcome excellent.

Conclusion: Endoscopic excision of benign breast lesions is safe, feasible and has excellent cosmetic outcomes with high patient's satisfaction.
