Abstract

Seawater intrusion is a problem that threatens many coastal aquifers around the world, especially concerning climate change. One of the susceptible regions is the Ain Sukhna area in Egypt, where three promising aquifers are mainly relied upon for development. This study investigates the initial condition of seawater intrusion impacts in the Ain Sukhna area using a 3-D groundwater numerical model that was created and run by MODFLOW and SEAWAT. The gathered information contributed in the model's building phase. Both groundwater head and salinity observed values in 2013 in the steady state and the dynamic state were employed to calibrate and validate the model. The results showed a great match between the calculated and observed values. It was concluded that both the medium and the deep aquifers were affected by seawater migration inland more than the shallow aquifer except for the zone having the shale layer that obstructed seawater intrusion slightly.
