Flexural Behavior of Steel and FRP-Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete Beams : Numerical Modeling and Analytical Study

Abstract

Geopolymer concrete has developed as an environmentally sustainable construction material gained importance due to its cement-free production process. Additionally, it has the advantages of early strength development, superior mechanical properties, and avoiding of water curing. This paper presents numerical modeling through nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) of reinforced geopolymer concrete beams as well as analytical study. The numerical modeling and nonlinear analysis are performed using commercial software ANSYS, version ANSYS21 to simulate the flexural behavior for previously tested laboratory geopolymer concrete beams reinforced with steel and glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRP) bars, and containing two types of fibers, steel and polypropylene fibers. Four-point bending loads were applied during the flexure test of the beams. The numerical results are presented and compared with the published experimental findings. A reasonable correlation between numerical and experimental results is observed, thus validating the efficiency of the modelling methodology for analyzing and designing geopolymer concrete elements.
