The United Nations Human Rights System

The United Nations was created in 1945 to maintain international peace and security, and to encourage and promote respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.One of the great achievements of the United Nations is the creation of a comprehensive body of human rights law, which includes the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted in 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly, partly in response to the atrocities of World War II. The UDHR was bifurcated into treaties, a Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and another on social, economic, and cultural rights in 1966.

The United Nations established human rights bodies, which include the Human Rights Council and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, to monitor the implementation of human rights instruments, and provide assistance to governments in the Human Rights field.

Finally, some recommendations have been proposed to promote the UN human rights system.
