Abstract

The research focuses on the meanings and symbolic dimensions related to a term that appeared in the 1970s, which is “disability art." The term was accompanied by a political movement associated with the disabled in the world, and although the origin of the term has not yet been conclusively proven, what is certain is that the first appearance of this term in sources and research studies came in 1986 AD. These sources defined it as “art created by a number of people with disabilities, such that these works reflect the effects of those with disabilities." However, the idea of “disability" in light of modern ideological concepts has gone beyond those limited concepts associated with a human deficiency, to carry within its contents and meanings to describe peoples, societies, institutions and systems at their various levels. In this context, contemporary artistic works have emerged to express these modern concepts of disability. The works of contemporary artist “Yinka Shonibare" represent the embodiment of the popular and cultural meanings of disability and handicap in light of the effects left by colonialism within Africa, through a diverse number of works, some of which are based on reformulating works. Classic, while others are based on installation techniques in space and performing arts. His disability, which has plagued him since his childhood years, played a major role in shaping his artistic vision and personality, so that the “Yinka" experience became a true mirror that explains the term “disability art" and its importance in contemporary artistic life.
