Abstract

The experiment was implemented in Minya Governorate, Beni Mazar Center, at N 30°47'51" and E 30°28'12'' during the period from June to December 2023. The present study aimed to maximize water use efficiency in aquaponic farming system, the experiment was designed using Nutrient Film Technique (NFT). The study included four variables; the first treatment (T1) is the use of water produced from fish tank to the planting unit; the second treatment (T2) is the use of water produced from fish tank to mechanical filter to the planting unit; the third treatment (T3) the use of water produced from fish tank to biological filter to the planting unit. Pepper seedlings were grown in tube, the length of the cultivation tube was 3m, the distance between plants 25 cm, size of the fish tank used 1m3, size of mechanical filter and biological filter used 300 liters for one. A separate fish tank was also added as the fourth treatment (T4). The fish tanks were provided with oxygen and food in equal proportions, With the addition of single-sex catfish fry, and added a separate water pump for each treatment discharge 2500 l/h. Different measures for every treatment were taken including dissolved oxygen, Water temperature, TDS, PH, ammonia (NH3-N), and WUE. The results indicated that water use efficiency values for T1, T2, and T3 were 2.76, 3.23, and 4.38 kg/m3 respectively. However, the highest water use efficiency was recorded with T3 and the lowest with T1. where (T3) was higher than (T1) by 57.7%, and higher than (T2) by 20.23 %. Production of catfish in (T1, T2, and T3) 8.838 kg/m3, Compared with (T4), where the production value of animal protein for catfish 2.096 kg/m3. saving water in (T1, T2, and T3) Compared with (T4) 321 %. At the end of the experiment, the ammonia (NH3-N) percentage in average ammonia in (T1, T2, and T3) Compared with (T4) reached (3.99, and 9.99) ppm, respectively.
