Abstract
Background: Awareness of adolescent girls regarding iodine deficiency is very important to prevent iodine
deficiency problems among adolescent girls. The study aimed to assess awareness of adolescent girls regarding
iodine deficiency at Helwan university. Design: A descriptive research design was used. Setting: This study
conducted in two theoretical facilities at Helwan University (Faculty of Art and Faculty of Social Work).
Sample: Multistage random sample include 300 adolescent girls was be used. Tools: Structured interview
questionnaire consist of four parts , Socio-demographic data of the adolescent girls , adolescent girls knowledge
about iodine and iodine deficiency , adolescent girls attitude toward iodine deficiency and adolescent girls
reported practices regarding iodine deficiency . Results: 65.3% of the studied adolescent girls had unsatisfactory
level of total knowledge regarding iodine deficiency, while 55.3% and 68% of studied adolescent girls had
negative attitude and inadequate reported practices level regarding iodine deficiency respectively. Conclusion:
There was a highly statistically significant relation between studied adolescent girl's total knowledge and their
demographic characteristics ( age, gender and parents educational level ). As well, there were highly statistically
significant positive correlation between total knowledge, attitude and reported practices regarding iodine
deficiency among the studied adolescent girls. Recommendations: Periodic educational campaigns , seminars or
workshops should be regularly organized to university students regarding iodine and iodine deficiency
problems.
