In this paper a regional synthesis of development and migration is attempted. Specifically, we have examined the extent of the spatial linkage between migration patterns and level of regional development. The analysis is divided into two interrelated but analytically independent steps; namely, the measurement and analysis of level and pattern of spatial development and the examination of the extent and the intensity of the linkage between development and patterns of inter-regional migration. A multivariate approach has been followed which was used to rank the different regions (governorates) on a development scale. Finally, multiple regression analysis was used to examine the effect of separate patterns of development on net migration and its components: in-and out-migration. The analysis illustrates the existence of large regional disparities in Egypt, with more developed regions attracting the majority of migrants. The results also show that in-migration and out-migration are influenced by different factors. Furthermore, it appears that socioeconomic conditions at destinations play a stronger role in determining the level of net migration than the corresponding conditions at the origin.
